YMCA of Greater Seattle Program Supervisor, Teen Development in Seattle, Washington

Overview

Program Supervisor will develop youth leaders through the implementation of school-based clubs in the YMCA Earth Service Corps (YESC) program, which provide opportunities for environmental education, leadership development, service-learning, and cross-cultural awareness which instill confidence, build character, and support youth in reaching their fullest potential. Program Supervisor will foster strong relationships with youth, community partners, and volunteers, engaging them through club participation and one-day events including conferences, habitat restoration, and outdoor opportunities.

YMCA Earth Service Corps is leadership through environmental service. The mission of YESC is to empower young people to become effective, responsible, global citizens by providing opportunities for service learning, environmental education, and cross-cultural awareness. Program Supervisor serving with YMCA Earth Service Corps will play a crucial role in delivering high quality positive youth development programming to teens in the Greater Seattle Area. YESC is a multi-faceted program that combines school-based environmental clubs, service-learning projects, outdoor opportunities and regional environmental education events into a comprehensive model that minimizes barriers to participation and allows for engagement of diverse populations.

This is a school-year position; approx. 25 hours a week, 5 hours per day, some evenings and weekends required.

Responsibilities

  1. Serve with 4-5 middle or high school environmental service clubs over the course of the school year, initiate and develop partnerships at new schools by identifying sites, fostering relationships, connecting with volunteer Club Advisors, and recruiting teen participants.

  2. Coordinate with youth leaders to plan and implement environmental service-learning projects.

  3. Supervise the planning and facilitation of regional environmental projects including habitat restoration; outdoor opportunities including day hikes, snowshoeing, and kayaking; and educational field trips that foster strong connections between youth and the natural world.

  4. Coordinate and plan regional events and including an Environmental Leaders Summit, Environmental Symposium two Eco-Retreats, and a Year-End Celebration.

  5. Coordinate and facilitate special programs, including YESC Mini-Grants and Leadership Council.

  6. Support registration and participant recruitment for all events; manage volunteers.

  7. Communicate with program audiences, including teachers, youth participants, volunteers, and community partners via social media, newsletters, email communications, etc.

  8. Collaborate with staff, teen leaders, and volunteers to enhance and improve programming through the development of new curriculum, resources and community partnerships.

  9. Support YESC fundraising efforts including Annual Fund Drive, one-day events, and year-round philanthropy.

  10. Professionally engages with parents/guardians to provide pertinent information about their child’s experience and to promote upcoming programs.

  11. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency procedures.

  12. May maintain required records according to YMCA standards, including attendance records, registration information, accident reports and other records.

  13. Ensures that supplies are maintained and purchased as necessary.

  14. Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.

  15. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. 21 years of age or older.

  2. High school graduate or equivalent.

  3. Three+ years of experience working with youth.

  4. One year or more of supervisory, team lead, or other leadership experience.

  5. Strong customer service skills, responding to multiple questions via phone, email and in person. Ability to problem solve and resolve conflict.

  6. Strong computer skills.

  7. Knowledge of standard office equipment.

  8. Current state approved first-aid certification.

    1. Current state approved infant/child (or community if school aged) CPR certification.** At hire, or earliest possible training (but no later than 90 days after employment).

PREFERRED POSITION ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS

  • College degree

  • WFR or WFA certification

  • Knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, etc.).

  • Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
